Uttarakhand, formerly known as Uttaranchal, is also known as ‘Devbhumi’ – The Land of the Gods and located in the north of India. With Dehradun, as its capital, is divided into two divisions – Garhwal and Kumaon. The Ganges and Yamuna, two most important rivers in Hinduism originate from here.  Forest area covering 65% of the total state area, has been known for its great diversity of flora and fauna. It has been a home to many rare species of plants and animals. With some holiest Hindu shrines, for hundreds of year’s pilgrims have been visiting the region for hopes of salvation from purification from sins.

Art & Culture of Uttrakhand

The culture of Uttarakhand shows a very distinct pattern, with mix of culture of the ethnic groups staying and the age old mythological importance. Hindi, Kumaoni, Garhwali, Jaunsari and Bhitoya are a few prominent languages spoken throughout the state. Folk music and dance of the Kumaon and Garhwal region are varied and famous.

Mythological paintings with illustrations from Ramayana and Gods and Goddesses and Folk paintings are a major art form. Wood carvings, jewellery crafts, woven textiles like blankets and woollen clothing finds a way in the art form. Bamboo and cane products are quite popular and used.
