  • Uttarakhand, formerly known as Uttaranchal, is also known as ‘Devbhumi’ – The Land of the Gods and located in the north of India. With Dehradun, as its capital, is divided into two divisions – Garhwal and Kumaon. The Ganges and Yamuna, two most important rivers in Hinduism originate from here.  Forest area covering 65% of the total state area, has been known for its great diversity of flora and fauna. It has been a home to many rare species of plants and animals. With some holiest Hindu shrines, for hundreds of year’s pilgrims have been visiting the region for hopes of salvation from purification from sins.

  • The culture of Uttarakhand shows a very distinct pattern, with mix of culture of the ethnic groups staying and the age old mythological importance. Hindi, Kumaoni, Garhwali, Jaunsari and Bhitoya are a few prominent languages spoken throughout the state. Folk music and dance of the Kumaon and Garhwal region are varied and famous.

    Mythological paintings with illustrations from Ramayana and Gods and Goddesses and Folk paintings are a major art form. Wood carvings, jewellery crafts, woven textiles like blankets and woollen clothing finds a way in the art form. Bamboo and cane products are quite popular and used.

    • Dehradun – the state capital, locate at the foothills of Himalaya, is famous for its scenic landscapes and views. Shahastradhara and Tapkeshwar temple are the places to visit.
    • Nainital – referred to as the ‘Lake district of India’, the Naini lake and the Naini Peak are irresistible for tourists.
    • Mussoorie – called as thye ‘Queen of Hills’, Kempty Falls, Lal Tibba and Happy Valley are the major places to visit.
    • Rishikesh – spirituality, temples, adventure sports and ghats are all about this place.
    • Haridwar – popular of its numerous temples and ghats, hosts the festival, Kumbh Mela, once in every twelve years.
    • Kedarnath & Badrinath – the two of the char dhams, are famous for mythological temples of Lord Shiva.
    • Trekking – with enthralling stretches, panoramic view of mountains and snow peaks and challenging terrains, this is something you would enjoy for sure being in Uttarakhand.
    • Mountain Biking – mountain biking in the Himalayan ranges spreads across the entire state. The breath taking views and river chants it is one of the mainly desired activity.
    • River Rafting – set amongst the picturesque landscape and roaring rivers, rafting is as adventurous as it could be.
    • Bird watching – host to almost 150 species of birds, some rare and distinct species could be spotted. It is also considered as one of the best places for wild life photographers.
